Physician Investigator Research Award

This program supports Michigan physicians who seek to improve the quality, cost or access to health care for residents through pilot studies, feasibility studies or small research projects. 

It offers up to $10,000 in funding.

We encourage potential grantees to submit a concept paper (PDF) to for feedback before submitting a full proposal.

In an effort to enhance our impact on the health of Michigan residents, the BCBSM Foundation desires to focus research grants on the following topics. Grant applications on the following areas will be given preference for awards:

  • Hypertension
  • Major depression
  • High cholesterol
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Alcohol Use Disorder
  • Other Substance Use Disorder
  • Psychotic disorder
  • Crohn’s Disease/Ulcerative Colitis


Applicants must be physicians based in Michigan.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan employees and their immediate family members are ineligible. Employees of any BCBSM affiliate and their immediate family members also are ineligible.


We accept applications at any time. However, we review applications three times per year at our board meetings.

We'll email applicants a funding decision within 10 business days of our board meetings.

Proposal requirements

We review grant applications for the following criteria:

  • The viability of the project as a possible area of research
  • The potential of the project for answering the research question
  • The applicant’s qualifications for conducting the proposed project
  • The feasibility of the proposed project

Application instructions

An application must include the following items:

  • Completed application form (PDF)
  • Signed terms and conditions (PDF)
  • Completed grant application summary (PDF)
  • One-page, double-spaced project summary
  • Brief bio sketch of the principal investigators and other key personnel
  • Detailed budget with justifications
  • Three-to-five-page, double-spaced proposal
    • Research question(s) or hypothesis upon which the project is based
    • Significance of the issue being addressed
    • Research design including a description of the intervention or topic being proposed
    • Expected results and impact of the research
  • Statement affirming the applicant has met institutional requirements for research involving human subjects
