Protect yourself against flu and other respiratory infections

If you have a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network Medicare plan, learn how you can use your coverage to protect yourself.

Your shots are covered

If you have a Medicare plan with us your flu, pneumonia, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are covered at no cost to you.

When to get your shots

The best time to get your flu and pneumonia shots is any time after July 1 each year. This is because flu season typically begins in the fall. Peak months for the flu season in Michigan are November through April.

The flu spreads quickly during those peak months. So, getting vaccinated early is important, because it gives your body a chance to protect itself.

Seniors 65 and older should ask for a high-dose or adjuvanted flu shot, as recommended by the CDC. The enhanced vaccines create a stronger immune response to provide more protection against flu in older adults.

Where to get your shots
  • Your doctor's office
  • A community health center
  • A pharmacy that accepts your Medicare plan

Not sure if your pharmacy is in our network? Use our pharmacy directory to find an in-network location near you.

Getting a COVID-19 shot at the same time

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidance stating that flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time. Even though both vaccines can be given during the same visit, you should follow the recommended schedule for each vaccine.

RSV vaccine for seniors

Three RSV vaccines are now available — GSK's AREXVY, Moderna's mRESVIA® and Pfizer's ABRYSVO®. The RSV vaccine is recommended for all adults 75 and older and for adults 50–74 years who are at increased risk of severe RSV.

How to get reimbursed

Even though we cover your flu and pneumonia shots, occasionally Medicare Advantage members are asked to pay out of pocket first. If you paid for your flu or pneumonia shot, keep your receipt and fill out this form.
