When to get your shots

The best time to get your flu and pneumonia vaccines each year is any time after July 1. Flu season in Michigan typically begins in the fall with peak months from November through April.

The flu spreads quickly during those peak months. Getting vaccinated early is important because it gives your body a chance to protect itself.

Tips for vaccines

Recommended flu dosage for seniors

Seniors 65 and older should ask for a high-dose or adjuvanted flu shot, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. The enhanced vaccines create a stronger immune response and provide more protection against flu in older adults.

Getting a COVID-19 and flu shot at the same time

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidance stating that flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time. Even though both vaccines can be given during the same visit, you should follow the recommended schedule for each vaccine.

RSV vaccine for seniors

Three RSV vaccines are now available — GSK’s AREXVY, Moderna’s mRESVIA® and Pfizer’s ABRYSVO®. The RSV vaccine is recommended for all adults 75 and older and for adults 50–74 years who are at increased risk of severe RSV.

How to get reimbursed

Even though we cover your flu and pneumonia shots, occasionally Medicare Advantage members are asked to pay out of pocket first. If you paid for your flu or pneumonia vaccine, keep your receipt and fill out this reimbursement form.
