How Do I Know If I'm Automatically Enrolled in Medicare?

Some individuals are auto enrolled in different parts of Original Medicare. Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A and Part B.

Whether you're one of those individuals depends on your situation.

You'll be auto enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B if:

  • You're 65, and already receiving benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
  • You're younger than 65, have a disability and have been receiving disability benefits for 24 months through Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
  • You have Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

You'll be auto enrolled in Medicare Part A if:

  • You're 65, live in Puerto Rico and are currently receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits.

You'll be auto enrolled in Medicare Part B if:

  • You're getting disability benefits when you turn 65, and already have Part A Medicare.

You'll be auto enrolled in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage if:

  • You're part of the government Low-Income Subsidy program because you qualify for Medicare and Medicaid.
  • You're currently receiving Supplemental Security Income.

If none of the above situations apply to you, you need to enroll in Medicare during your Medicare initial enrollment period.
