Who is this for?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network adult members under age 65.

Preventive services are part of a healthy lifestyle because they help you avoid or detect health problems. Some examples include annual health checkups, wellness screenings and immunizations.

And the best news? Blue Cross plans cover them, so why not use them.

Preventive services keep you healthy

Health screenings and wellness exams can discover problems you may not know you have. The earlier problems are found, the greater the opportunity for treatment. Preventive services include screenings for colon and breast cancers, diabetes, blood pressure and depression.

Women’s preventive care

The Affordable Care Act established that some women-specific services be covered by many health insurance plans. Those services include:

  • Screenings for gestational diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, cervical cancer, breast cancer and more
  • Education, counseling and prescriptions for birth control and sterilization
  • Domestic violence screening and counseling
  • Breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling

Preventive services are free

If you see an in-network doctor, and your visit is strictly for preventive care, you won’t have to worry about a copay, coinsurance or your deductible.

You may have to pay if:

  • You receive services other than preventive care during the same visit
  • The services are used to treat, diagnose or monitor an illness, injury or health problem
