Okemos psychologist convicted of fraud

The Corporate and Financial Investigations department at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan received a tip from our own Customer Service department that a psychologist was engaging in questionable billing practices from his residence in Okemos.

The CFI department and the Meridian Township Police Department investigated and discovered that the psychologist billed for services when he was out of the state on vacation, as well as for when he was in the hospital having surgery. He also billed one patient for counseling every day of the week, including weekends. A search warrant executed at his residence confirmed the fraudulent services.

The psychologist pled guilty to one count of health care fraud and was sentenced to probation. He was ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution and investigative costs to us and agreed to surrender his medical license.

This psychologist's scheme to defraud us would have continued if not for the tip from our Customer Service employees.

Members who suspect health care fraud are urged to call our Anti-Fraud Hotline at 1-800-482-3787, or report fraud through our website.
