Emergency medical condition
An emergency medical condition is an illness, injury or symptom that requires immediate medical attention to avoid permanent damage, severe harm or loss of life.
Without medical attention, it's reasonable to assume the following of an emergency medical condition:
- The health of the patient (or for a pregnant woman, the health of the woman or her unborn child) to be in serious jeopardy
- Serious impairment to bodily functions
- Serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part (or for a pregnant woman who is having contractions, there is not enough time to transfer to a different hospital before delivery, or the transfer may pose a threat to the health and safety of the woman or unborn child)
