If you have Blue Cross or Blue Care Network coverage and you have questions about coverage for mental health or substance use treatment, this is for you.

Am I covered?

Many Blue Cross and Blue Care Network plans cover services such as residential treatment and applied behavior analysis. However, your plan may have requirements that you have to meet before you're covered for these services.

Employers customize plans by choosing which benefits to include and what you might need to do to get them. That’s why it's important to check your coverage before getting these services.

How do I check my coverage?

The easiest way to check your coverage is by logging into your member account. You can do that using our website or the Blue Cross mobile app. Follow these steps after logging in:

  1. Go to My Coverage
  2. Select Medical
  3. Select What’s Covered
  4. Find behavioral health care, mental health care and substance use treatment

Under behavioral health care and substance use treatment services you’ll get information about:

  • Plan requirements for getting services
  • Which services your plan covers
  • How much you pay
  • How much your plan pays

Getting services

Need help finding a participating provider? Would you like to speak with a case manager to help you make your next steps?

Before getting mental health care, counseling or substance use disorder services, call the behavioral or mental health preauthorization number on the back of your Blue Cross ID card. We'll help you get the information you need.

  • All Blue Care Network HMO plans require preauthorization
  • Some Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan PPO plans require preauthorization, but not all. Check your mental health care and substance use treatment coverage. When providers need preauthorization, they'll contact us to get it.
