Q: Why is there a work stoppage?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is experiencing a work stoppage of its bargaining unit employees while the company continues to work toward a mutually acceptable agreement with the UAW after the bargaining unit contract expired. Blue Cross is working in good faith to resolve issues and at the same time, keeping an eye toward ensuring the company remains competitive and maintains reasonable administrative costs into the future.

Q: Will Blue Cross continue to be open for business?

Yes, while Blue Cross works to reach a labor agreement with the UAW, we have put in place a comprehensive contingency plan to continue to pay health care claims during this time, and doctors, hospitals and other medical providers can continue to submit health care claims.

 

Q: Does the work stoppage affect Blue Care Network?

Blue Care Network is not included in the work stoppage. 

 

Q: How can members reach Blue Cross?

Customer Service telephone assistance will be available, although wait times may be longer than normal. Members will be encouraged to use our automated phone response system.

Members will be able to continue to log in to their accounts at bcbsm.com or use the mobile app to check their benefits, claims and out-of-pocket expenses.

Blue Cross will continue to accept written inquiries from members. The address to mail inquiries can be found on the top corner of your Explanation of Benefits statement.

 

Q:  Will the online member portal and mobile app still be available to me?

Yes. Log in to our member portal or mobile app for information about your claims and benefits.

 

Q: Should I continue to pay my premiums in the same way I do today?

Yes, please submit your payments as normal. We will continue to process premium payments.

 

Q: Will my health care claims continue to be processed?

Yes. Your health care provider can continue to submit claims to us.

 

Q: Will I be able to enroll in your health care coverage?

Yes. Enrollment processes will continue to be available.

 

Q: Will I be able to fill my prescription with my Blue Cross card?

Yes. You can continue to go to the pharmacy with your Blue Cross card.

 

Q: Does the work stoppage affect Medicare members?

Medicare members with questions and inquiries should call the number on the back of their ID card. Customer Service telephone assistance will be available, although wait times may be longer than normal. Medicare members are encouraged to use our automated phone response system.

Medicare members will be able to continue to log in to their accounts at bcbsm.com or use the mobile app to check their benefits, claims and out-of-pocket expenses.

 

Q: When will the work stoppage end?

We don’t know. Blue Cross and the UAW are currently working in good faith to negotiate a new contract to replace the one that expired.
