Are flu and pneumonia shots covered by my plan?

Who is this for?

If you want to lower your chances of getting the flu or pneumonia, here's what you need to know about getting vaccinated when you have a Medicare Advantage plan.

Did you know adults age 65 years and older are more likely to get the flu and pneumonia? And when you get a flu shot and a pneumonia shot, you’re not just protecting yourself. You’re protecting the people around you, too.

The good news is our Medicare Advantage plans cover both vaccines. So, you won't owe anything. They're easy to get, too.

When to get your shot

The best time to get your flu shot is any time after July 1 each year, usually at the beginning of flu season in the fall.

It's recommended that you get a pneumonia shot when you're 65 or older. Talk to your doctor about what’s best for you based on your medical history.

Where to get your shot

You can:

  • Call your doctor or primary care physician and make an appointment. You may have an office visit copay.

  • Go to a pharmacy that offers flu and pneumonia shots. Before you go, call to make sure the pharmacy accepts your Medicare plan, or look in your pharmacy directory.

  • Check with your local health department or community health center to see what they offer.

How to get reimbursed

Even though we cover your flu or pneumonia shot, you might have to pay out of pocket first.

If you paid for your shot, keep your receipt and fill out the Flu and Pneumonia Shots Reimbursement Form (PDF).
