March 2025

Diclofenac 1% gel prescription formulation discontinued

The prescription version of diclofenac 1% gel, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug usually used for temporary relief of arthritis pain and inflammation, has been discontinued. It’s currently listed on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s and Blue Care Network’s Medicare Advantage and Part D plan formularies but will be removed March 1, 2025.

Pharmacies may still dispense the prescription version if they have it in stock. No additional product will be available for the member to fill once the pharmacy runs out.

An over-the-counter version of this pain reliever, Voltaren gel, is available for members to purchase, but it’s not eligible for insurance coverage.
