Pharmacies can bill us for COVID-19 testing
Pharmacies that participate in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network Vaccine Affiliation Program or have the ability to submit Medicare Part B medical claim forms can bill Blue Cross or BCN for COVID-19 testing services for patients with Blue Cross or BCN commercial or Medicare Advantage (Medicare Plus Blue℠ or BCN Advantage℠) coverage.
This change is in accordance with guidance issued April 8, 2020, by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services** and Executive Order 2020-104 issued by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.** It’s in effect until further notice.
Blue Cross and BCN are making it easier for members to get COVID-19 diagnostic and antibody tests by giving them more options on where they can be tested when:
- It’s medically necessary.
- The test is ordered by an attending health care provider.
The provider can be a licensed physician, pharmacist or attending clinician operating within the scope of their license.
We posted more information about this change in August on the COVID-19 webpage and on web-DENIS. A list of codes that pharmacies can use to bill COVID-19 testing is available on our COVID-19 webpages in the Patient testing section.
More information about COVID-19 testing is available on our public website at bcbsm.com/coronavirus and through the COVID-19 information page within Provider Secured Services.
