Physical, occupational, speech therapy billing changes Oct. 1

Beginning Oct. 1, 2013, BCBSM will have new billing requirements for hospital outpatient departments and freestanding outpatient physical therapy facilities for physical, occupational and speech therapy services.

Here are the changes:

• Value code 80 is no longer required.
• Series billing is no longer required.
• Line item reporting of PT, OT and ST revenue and HCPCS codes is effective for dates of service Oct. 1, 2013, and later.

This claim example below illustrates the way charges should be billed for outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy in a freestanding outpatient physical therapy facility or hospital outpatient location, effective Oct. 1, 2013.
