Blue Cross works with OPEN to combat opioid epidemic across Michigan

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan continues to collaborate with the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network, or OPEN, to address the ongoing opioid crisis affecting communities across Michigan. In 2024, the collaboration between Blue Cross and OPEN supported the provider community’s efforts to help prevent new opioid addiction and improve lives for those already facing the struggles of opioid use disorder.

OPEN’s preventive measures were highlighted by assisting sites across Michigan to take part in national take-back events and supporting at-home medication disposal options. In 2024, Michigan collected more than 43,000 pounds of medication through take-back events and an additional 507 pounds from permanent disposal boxes. Additionally, OPEN distributed 6,100 Deterra disposal bags and 1,000 mail-back envelopes to encourage proper medication disposal.

OPEN continued to refine its prescribing recommendations, which now include 32 adult procedures and 14 pediatric procedures. These evidence-based prescribing recommendations help providers deliver optimal pain control while reducing the risk of opioid dependence. The recommendations are accessible through OPEN’s website.

Additional opportunities supported by the Blue Cross and OPEN collaboration include free education for implementing or expanding medication-assisted treatment. MAT is a vital service for patients suffering from an opioid use disorder. Access to MAT can help these patients manage their addiction and return to a normal life.

In 2024, OPEN hosted 13 provider-focused webinars, reaching more than 1,500 providers. Additionally, OPEN offers 30 online learning modules related to a variety of substance use disorders that can be found on its website. For providers who are new to offering MAT or who encounter particularly challenging cases, OPEN offers free consultation services where providers can connect with other treatment providers about their complex MAT cases.

Providers can also work with OPEN to obtain free co-branded materials to display in their offices and share with their patients to educate them about safe substance use, disposal and treatment for addiction and more.
