Hospital Compare: 20 Michigan hospitals get top rating

Twenty Michigan hospitals received the top rating — 5 stars — in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ January 2022 Hospital Compare overall ratings. This is the same number of hospitals that received 5 stars when we reported the ratings in March-April 2021 issue of Hospital and Physician Update.

CMS updated the measures it uses for its Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating data in April 2021. The Hospital Compare overall hospital rating now uses measures across five areas of quality to calculate a “star” rating — from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) — for hospitals nationwide. It previously used seven areas of quality to calculate a star rating. The current five areas of quality are:

  • Mortality
  • Safety of care
  • Readmission
  • Patient experience
  • Timey and effective care

The data is updated quarterly and the latest ratings were released on Jan. 26. Here’s how Michigan hospitals fared in the January 2022 update:

  • Five stars: 20 hospitals
  • Four stars: 31 hospitals
  • Three stars: 33 hospitals
  • Two stars: 13 hospitals
  • One star: 4 hospitals
