Hospital Compare update: 20 Michigan hospitals get top rating

Twenty Michigan hospitals were given the top rating — 5 stars — in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ January 2020 Hospital Compare overall ratings.

Over the past four years, the number of 5-star hospitals in Michigan has increased. The number of 5-star hospitals:

  • 2020 — 20
  • 2019 — 11
  • 2018 —10
  • 2017 — 5

Here’s how Michigan hospitals fared in the January 2020 update:

  • 5 stars: 20 hospitals
  • 4 stars: 38 hospitals
  • 3 stars: 28 hospitals
  • 2 stars: 19 hospitals
  • 1 star: 4 hospitals

Using CMS data, the Hospital Compare overall hospital rating uses measures across seven areas of quality to calculate a “star” rating — from 1 (worst) to 5 (best) — for hospitals nationwide. The ratings are based on quality data as recent as October 2019. To learn more about how the overall hospital rating is calculated, click here.
