For the eighth consecutive year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and its physician partners lead the nation in advancing the patient-centered medical home model of care. A total of 1,638 practices — with 4,534 physicians — have earned designation as patient-centered medical homes. Read more.

Tribute to cancer researcher highlights great work in Michigan

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of attending a tribute to Karmanos Cancer Institute researcher Gloria Heppner, who was being recognized for her contributions to cancer research. In particular, she was cited* for writing one of the most influential scientific articles in the history of the journal Cancer Research. Her article on tumor heterogeneity was described as “more often highlighted by editors, American Association for Cancer Research fellows and cancer researchers than any other [article].” Read more.

Tablet splitting: A risky practice

Tablet splitting may seem like a great way for patients to save money on their prescriptions but, according to the Food and Drug Administration, tablet splitting is a risky practice that can adversely affect patient safety. In certain circumstances, tablet splitting may be clinically indicated, such as when patients have difficulty swallowing or if an appropriate dose for a patient is not commercially available.
