Fifty years ago, people who wanted information about their health made an appointment to see their family doctor or just went to the doctor’s office and waited their turn. They didn’t speak of their “primary care doctor” or their internist, and they rarely consulted a specialist. Now it’s not uncommon for patients — particularly elderly patients — to have five or six specialists they see regularly. Patients used to consider “their doctor” to be their only source of health information and tended to follow his or her advice without questioning it. Read more.
