Snacking can be healthy if you make the right choices
Snacking between meals is a good way to stay on top of your hunger and get an extra energy boost throughout your day. Avoiding junk food and choosing the right snack is easy if you follow this advice:
Make it healthy. Use nutrition labels to avoid foods high in sodium, saturated fat and added sugars. Some seemingly healthy snacks, such as granola bars, are packed with sugar and saturated fat.
Watch your portion size. Read the nutrition label and stay within the recommended serving size.
Focus on getting protein and fiber to satisfy your hunger cravings. Protein and fiber will make you feel fuller longer and tide you over to your next meal.
Stay on top of your hunger. Don’t wait until you’re so hungry that you grab the chips or cookies because they’re easy to get.
Try these healthy snack options:
Hummus with carrot sticks
A tablespoon of natural peanut butter on a slice of whole-grain bread
A palm-full of unsalted almonds
A whole piece of fruit
Avocado slices on a piece of whole-grain toast topped with a poached egg and your favorite hot sauce
