Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative
Sixteen of the largest hospitals in Michigan are participating in a ground-breaking initiative that evaluates the results of general and vascular surgery procedures performed in their institutions.
It is a pioneering effort between a national medical organization (American College of Surgeons) and a private health plan (BCBSM) to evaluate and improve the quality of surgical care while ultimately reducing health care delivery costs.
Data on the outcome of surgeries is being submitted to the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgery Quality Improvement Program. The goal is to use the data to reduce infection, illness or death associated with selected surgical procedures.
The hospitals are receiving financial support from BCBSM for a substantial portion of the data collection costs, and for coordination of the consortium’s quality improvement efforts.
