Administrative Training for Professional Providers

BCBSM is offering billing and web-DENIS seminars for professional billers across the state. This is part of our ongoing commitment to make it easier for you to do business with us.


These seminars are designed for new billers or office personnel who haven't attended these classes in the past two years and want to learn the newest ways to do business with BCBSM.


To show our appreciation for your participation with BCBSM, all seminars are free to providers.


Each seminar is a half-day session, with the exception of Billing 1-2-3, which lasts two full days and web-DENIS for Physicians and Professionals, which lasts one full day.

  • Check-in for morning sessions is 8:30 a.m.; class runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Check-in for afternoon sessions is 12:30 p.m.; class runs from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Check-in for full-day sessions is 8:30 a.m.; class runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Webinar participants should log in 10 minutes before the session begins.


Available Seminars

Billing 1-2-3

This two-day class is designed for new billers who bill professional claims for a physician in an office, clinic, hospital or urgent care facility. We also welcome experienced billers who have not attended the class recently. This class will also prepare you for filing and following up on claims. We'll cover the following topics:


  • Basic resources for working with BCBSM
  • Eligibility
  • Benefit features such as coordination of benefits, BlueCard®, Master Medical, PPO, precertification, predetermination and Medicare Supplemental
  • Hands-on procedures for filing and following up on claims, using the CMS-1500 claim and the Status Claim Review Form
  • Coding and reimbursement procedures
  • Basic BCN information and resource guide
  • Billing changes required by new BCN claim processing system

For all dates and locations, check-in is at 8:30 a.m. both days, with the seminar running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will break for lunch. Four CEUs are assigned to this class.

BCBSM Current Topics

Covers current topics events going on at the Blues, such as Michigan Operating System, Electronic Funds Transfer, Medicare Advantage and more.

Medicare Advantage

This half-day session highlights our Medicare Advantage plans, which offer comprehensive, private fee-for-service coverage that combines the benefits of original Medicare (Parts A and B) with other supplemental benefits into a single health care plan for both individuals and group members. Two CEUs are assigned to this class.

Specialty Billing: Outpatient Psychiatric Care

This session will cover billing issues related to outpatient psychiatric facilities.

web-DENIS for Physicians and Professional Offices:
Receptionist, benefits and eligibility, claim tracking

web-DENIS is an automated system that providers use daily for verifying patient benefits, eligibility, copays and deductibles, checking and correcting claims, and using online provider manuals and quick code search. This class is for physicians and front-desk personnel in a doctor's office, clinic or urgent care facility.


Instructions for using the displays that impact eligibility, benefits, coordination of benefits, copays, deductibles, Medicare Supplemental, referrals and authorization will be covered. Also, claim tracking on web-DENIS, with instructions for accessing, viewing and interpreting pending and finalized claims for all lines of business (except Medicare Advantage) will be covered.


You will also receive instructions for using the BCBSM Provider Publications and Resources screens.


Check-in for all dates and locations begins at 8:30 a.m. The class will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two CEUs are assigned to this class.

General Information

  • You must register at least five days prior to the first day of the class. Any registration received fewer than five days in advance will not be accepted.
  • Submit one form for each individual and each seminar.
  • If the seminar you selected fills before we receive your registration, we will place you on a waiting list and notify you if an opening becomes available.
  • Visit Locate Us to get directions to the seminars at the BCBSM locations. For the other locations, please call the number listed after the seminar site for directions.
  • Lunch is not included with the seminars, but restaurants are located near the seminar sites.
  • If you need a copy of the ICD-9-CM or CPT manuals, please call your local bookstore.
