Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the University of Michigan and the Society of Hospital Medicine have selected 15 physician organizations working with 14 hospitals to participate in a statewide initiative to reduce preventable readmissions to the hospital and emergency room visits. Read More.

Blues, schools fight childhood obesity
Twenty-two elementary schools and nine community partners around Michigan have been awarded grants to implement programs that increase physical activity and improve nutrition among their student populations. The grants are part of the Blues’ 2010-2011 Building Healthy Communities: Engaging Elementary Schools and Community Partners program, BCBSM’s effort to reduce the risk and prevalence of childhood obesity. The new issue of dbusiness, a Detroit business journal, has named Sue Barkell as one of Metro Detroit’s 10 most powerful women in business. Barkell is the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan senior vice president of Health Care Value and is responsible for many of the company’s health care provider service areas, after assuming new duties earlier this year.
