Specialty Drugs

What are specialty drugs?

Specialty drugs are prescription medications that require special handling, administration, or monitoring. These drugs are used to treat complex, chronic and often costly conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney failure
  • Hepatitis C
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Infertility
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Organ transplants
  • Osteoporosis
  • Psoriasis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

15-Day Specialty Drug Limitation Program – This program targets highly potent specialty drugs that have an increased rate of adverse reactions. It applies only to members trying the drugs for the first time. Members are charged half their copayment for the 15-day supply.

How do I order specialty drugs?

If your medication is included in the specialty drug guide (PDF) you can:

  • Get your prescription drugs delivered to your home by mail ordering them through Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy (formerly known as Option Care), our specialty drug vendor. Download the Specialty Drug Brochure for ordering instructions, or call Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy at 1-866-515-1355 to order.
  • Fill your prescription at a retail pharmacy. Not all pharmacies will dispense specialty drugs, so call your pharmacy to verify that they will fill your prescription.
  • If filling your prescription at a retail pharmacy outside of Michigan, you must make sure the pharmacy you will be using participates in the out-of-state specialty pharmacy network.
