Using Your Coverage
Now that you've chosen a Medicare plan, you probably have questions about how it works. We have answers for you. Choose your plan below to learn more about your benefits and how to get the most out of your plan.
The plans on this page are for people who buy their own health insurance. Plans you get through an employer or group could work differently. If you can't find what you need on our website, call the Customer Service number on the back of your Blues ID card and we'll help.
Medicare Advantage plans
When you have Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, using your health coverage is less complicated. You still have Original Medicare Parts A and B. But your Medicare Advantage plan acts as your primary health insurance. We take care of your claims. You only show your Blues ID card when you need care, no matter where you are.
Medicare Plus Blue℠ PPO
When you have a PPO plan, you manage more of your health coverage by choosing the doctors you see. That includes doctors and hospitals who don't take our plan; we call that being out-of-network. You save money when you get your care in network. Your Medicare Plus Blue PPO plan still shares the cost if you don't. It's your choice.
BCN AdvantageSM HMO-POS and HMO plans
An HMO plan takes the guesswork out of your health coverage. That's because you choose a primary care physician who manages all your care. HMO plans also have a network: a defined area where you can go to get care.
In Michigan, your plan won't cover care you get outside the network except in an emergency. If you have an HMO-POS plan, you're covered if you need a doctor while traveling outside of the state.
Blue Cross® Medicare Private Fee for Service
Our Private Fee for Service, or PFFS, plan covers medical services only. You'll pay more toward your premium, but once you meet your decuctible, you'll pay less for health care services.
Get care from any doctor or hospital in Michigan counties, or go anywhere else in the country that accepts Medicare.
Part D prescription drug coverage
Part D coverage protects you against the high costs of medications and makes getting your prescriptions filled easy. Ninety-eight percent of pharmacies in Michigan accept your Blues ID card. You may be able to get your prescription by mail order, too. Part D coverage works differently from your medical coverage. So it's a good idea to get to know Part D.
Medicare Advantage plan with Part D coverage
Most of our Medicare Advantage plans include Part D coverage except for BCN Advantage HMO-POS Elements. When you need information about your prescription coverage, you'll find it in your Medicare Advantage plan documents.
Prescription Blue℠ PDP plans
These plans only provide Part D prescription drug coverage. You just show your Blues ID card to the pharmacist; we do the rest. The two plans, Prescription Blue PDP Option A and Option B, share some documents but have separate drug lists.
Other Medicare options
MyBlue℠ Medigap, Blue Cross® Medicare Supplement Plans or BCN 65℠
When you have one of these plans, Original Medicare Parts A and B is your primary health coverage. You'll give the doctor your red, white and blue government Medicare card and your Blues ID card when you need care. Then we take care of your claims.
