When Should I Apply for a Medicare Supplement Plan?

You can apply for a Blue Cross® Medicare Supplement plan any time, but the best time is when you have a guaranteed issue right.

Guaranteed issue right

If you're new to Medicare or you're losing your current coverage, you may qualify for a guaranteed issue right. It's best to enroll then because you aren't subject to medical underwriting, which can impact how much you pay for your plan or whether you're denied coverage.

Plan eligibility

You can apply for a Blue Cross Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, as long as you:

  • Have both Medicare Part A hospital and Part B medical insurance
  • Live in Michigan for at least six months of the year

Eligibility restrictions

Some of our plans are only available if you meet certain requirements.

If you became eligible for Medicare before Jan. 1, 2020, you can apply for Plan C, F or HD-F.

You can also qualify to enroll in Plan A, C or D through other requirements.

How to apply

You can apply for these plans at any time. Learn how to apply.
