Dependent child

A dependent child is a child (under the age of 26) who is your natural child, adopted, under your legal guardianship, placed with you for adoption, or a stepchild. According to new health care reform laws, health plans must offer coverage to your dependent children through age 26, even if the child no longer lives with you, no longer is listed as a dependent on your tax return, or no longer is a student. This also applies regardless of the child's employment status or marital status.
