How to purchase or rent durable medical equipment (DME)
Who is this for?
If you are a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network member, this information will tell you how to purchase or rent durable medical equipment (often abbreviated as DME) for medical purposes.
Sometimes, when you're recovering at home from an operation, accident or illness, you may need what we call durable medical equipment, often abbreviated as DME. Just like medications, your doctor will be able to tell you what you need and write a prescription for you.
What is durable medical equipment?
It's equipment or appliances such as a wheelchair, commode or oxygen tank that is primarily used for medical purposes. Your insurance will only cover it you use appropriately in your home.
Are there any limitations or exceptions?
If you rent or buy durable medical equipment, we only cover basic equipment. If there are any special features that are medically unnecessary, it needs to be preauthorized by us.
If isn’t medically necessary or is considered deluxe, you can pay the difference.
Will I have any copayments?
You might. Take a look at your Certificate of Coverage or benefit summary for more details. Or, call the Customer Service number located on the back of your enrollee ID card and we'll help.
