Who can serve on our board and what are the duties?
We have three different options for those interested in serving on a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan board:
Director
A director is responsible for the well-being of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and its members. A director’s duties are to develop corporate policy, assure the company's financial stability and oversee how management executes policy and compliance with the law.
In addition, board members are assigned to various committees that each meet six to eight times a year.
- If you are appointed, you’ll need to continue to be a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan member during your entire tenure on the board.
Small Group Director Selection Council
There are three members on the Small Group Director Selection Council, also known as Council II. This council has the job of appointing three directors who will represent small group members on the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan board of directors. Council members can use any method they choose to seek candidates, as long as it encourages member participation.
- You can be considered for an appointment on this councel if you're a small-group member, or a member enrolled in a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan group insurance plan with fewer than 150 members. If you're not sure of your group size, please check with your employer, association or chamber.

Nongroup Director Selection Council
There are three members on the Nongroup Director Selection Council, also known as Council III. This council has the job of appointing three directors who will represent nongroup members on the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan board of directors. Council members can use any method they choose to seek candidates, as long as it encourages member participation.
- To be considered for an appointment, you only need to be a nongroup member. That means you're enrolled in a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan individual health insurance plan, have group conversion or Medicare Supplemental coverage.
