What Do I Need to Know About Calling Customer Service?

We know that sometimes you have questions about your coverage that you can’t figure out by yourself. If you need help, call our customer service department and get the answers you need.

What phone number do I call?

Look on the back of your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network ID card for the phone number to call. The number is also on your explanation of benefits statements. If you have individual coverage with us, the number also will be on any bill from us.

What do I need to have before I call?

When you call, we’ll ask you for your contract number or Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan or Blue Care Network ID number. Giving us that number helps us make sure you reach the right department.

You’ll find your contract or ID number on the front of your ID card or on your explanation of benefits statements. If you have individual coverage with us, that number also will be on any bill from us.

You only need tell us the number portion; the letters aren’t necessary.

If you’re calling about a dependent, you’ll need to know that dependent's birth date. If you’re calling about a claim, have the patient’s birth date and the actual date of service.

What questions can the automated system answer?

If you call during normal business hours, you can talk with one of our customer service representatives.

You can also get answers to your questions using our automated system. This may be especially helpful if all our representatives are busy with other customers, or if you’re calling after hours.

With the automated system, you’ll be able to:

  • Check on claims
  • Order ID cards
  • Find out who’s covered on your contract
  • Let us know if you have other insurance
  • Find out how to change your address
  • Learn how to add or remove someone from your policy

How do I make selections in the automated system?

Make your choices in the automated system either with your touch-tone phone or by saying your answers.

Just keep in mind that background noise may affect the voice commands. If you’d rather use your phone keypad, just hit *9 at any time during your call.
