Can I buy or change a 2014 individual or family plan?

Who is this for?

Michigan Health Insurance – Customer Service – Learn More

If you've had certain life events and need to change your current 2014 individual plan or enroll in one, this explains your options.

Almost everyone in the U.S. is required to have health insurance. If you don't, you may have to pay a fee, called the individual shared responsibility payment.

Open enrollment for 2014 individual and family plans ended on March 31. You can enroll in new coverage only if you've had changes in your life circumstances, also known as a qualifying event. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until the next open enrollment period. The next one will be in the fall of 2014.

What events could qualify me for a special enrollment period?

You may be able to enroll in a plan if you've had certain life events. Some examples are:

  • Marriage
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Loss of health coverage (due to job loss, divorce, death, or other reason)
  • Move to a different county
  • Change in income that may affect your subsidy

If any of these apply to you, we may ask you to provide proof before your coverage starts. We'll help you enroll in a plan.

I already have an individual or family plan. How can I make changes to it?

If you have an individual or family plan with us, you should call if you've experienced one the following life events. You may be allowed to add or remove a dependent or enroll in a new plan, if necessary.

  • Birth or adoption
  • Divorce
  • Death
  • Move to a different county
  • Change in income that may affect your subsidy

Here's who to call:

  • If your enrollee ID starts with XYE, JXI, or XYW, you'll need to make changes on the website or call 1-800-318-2596.
  • If your enrollee ID starts with XYB, XYH, XYQ or XYG, you'll need to contact your agent or call the number on the back of your member ID card. Then, you may be connected to one of our sales representatives, depending on your situation.
