Can I buy or change an individual or family plan?
Who is this for?
If you need to make changes to your individual and family plan, or enroll in a new one because you've had a change in your life circumstances, this explains your options.
If you're shopping for a new plan, you usually need to wait for open enrollment. Open enrollment for 2014 individual and family plans ended on March 31. The next open enrollment period will start in the fall of 2014.
However, you might be eligible for a special enrollment period if you have certain changes in your life circumstances. We sometimes refer to these changes as qualifying events.
You can make smaller changes, like updating your name or address, at any time.
I already have an individual and family plan. Can I change it?
If you have an individual and family plan now, and your circumstances have changed, you can make changes to your plan. How you do this depends on the type of plan you have. Your Blues ID card can help you figure this out.
- If your enrollee ID starts with XYE, JXI, or XYW, you'll need to make changes on the healthcare.gov website. You can also call 1-800-318-2596.
- If your enrollee ID starts with XYB, XYH, XYQ or XYG, you'll need to contact your agent or call the number on the back of your Blues ID card. Depending on your situation, you may talk to one of our sales representatives.
I need a new plan, and it's not open enrollment. What do I do?
You can only apply for coverage if you've experienced certain life events. You can see a list of these events below. You'll also see what you need to let us know when you enroll.
Depending on your situation, we might ask you for more than what's listed below. You could delay your application if you don’t send us the correct documents.
