Obstetrical stays
Who is this for?
If you're a Blue Care Network (HMO) plan member, this information will help you learn more about obstetrical stays.
According to the Newborns’ and Mothers’ Health Protection Act of 1996, when you are having a baby, we cannot restrict the length of your hospital stay to less than 48 hours following a vaginal delivery or 96 hours following a cesarean section. Blue Care Network complies with this legislation.
Your doctor or other health provider does not need to authorize a hospital stay up to 48 hours following a vaginal delivery or 96 hours following a cesarean section. However, the attending physician or certified nurse midwife, in consultation with the mother, may discharge the mother or newborn earlier than 48 hours following a vaginal delivery or 96 hours following a cesarean section.
