Why are men and women’s premiums different?

The groups of people who have the most expensive medical claims have the highest premiums.

You’ll have a lower premium when you’re 25 years old and you only visit the doctor once a year for a checkup. Your premium is much higher when you’re 65, taking five daily medications and recovering from a broken hip. You accumulate more medical expenses as you get older. Your premiums have to rise to make up for that.

The same principle applies to gender. On average, women have higher medical claims than men, and their premiums reflect that fact.

When we determine our premium rates, we study all the available data to make sure that what you pay is fair. We base our rates on claims experience and mandates from Michigan’s Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation.
