What are the differences between plans?

For 2014, there's a new difference in our dental plans. We have plans that cover all ages, and a pediatric plan that covers children up to age 19. All plans meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

The other main difference is how much you'll pay for services from the dentists you choose to see. With Blue Dental Personal, dentists fall into three groups:

  • PPO (in-network) dentists. Our PPO, or preferred provider organization, is a group of dental care professionals that provide services to members at discounted rates—up to 20 percent.
  • Blue Par Select℠ dentists. Although not part of our network, these dentists still give you discounts, usually around 8-10 percent.
  • Out-of-network dentists. You pay the dentist in full. Then you file a claim and we reimburse you. If you have out-of-network coverage and the dentist charges more than we pay for a service, you’ll need to make up the difference.

Blue Dental℠ PPO Personal Pediatric

This plan for children up to age 19 covers services from any licensed dentist, but you'll save the most when you see a dentist in our PPO network. For example, for preventive care like cleanings, you pay 10 percent when you see an in-network dentist, 50 percent if you go to a Blue Par Select or out-of-network dentist.

Blue Dental℠ EPO Personal

This plan covers people of all ages. EPO stands for exclusive provider organization. It means the plan only covers services from dentists in our network. This reduces costs, so it's our lowest-priced dental plan.

Blue Dental℠ PPO Personal

This plan covers people of all ages. You can see any licensed dentist, but you'll save the most when you see a dentist in our network. For example, for preventive care like cleanings, you pay 10 percent when you see an in-network dentist, 50 percent if you see a Blue Par Select or out-of-network dentist. This plan costs more than our EPO plan, but less than Blue Dental℠ PPO Plus Personal.

Blue Dental℠ PPO Plus Personal

This plan covers members of all ages. You can see any licensed dentist and your share of the cost is the same. That's why this plan has a slightly higher monthly payment. For example, cleanings are covered 100 percent whether you see an in-network dentist, a Blue Par Select dentist or an out-of-network dentist. But you'll save the most if you see a PPO dentist; they give our members the biggest discounts on services. This plan has deductibles for some services, but preventive care is covered 100 percent.
