Farmers Market Community Health Walks
The partnerships: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, cities and community organizations and farmers markets
The place: East Lansing, Lansing, Port Huron
The participants: Local residents
The plan: What better way to promote good health than a walk to the farmers market for fresh produce? Participants who complete the walking route during a sponsored local event get a $5 coin or voucher to that community’s farmers market. Nearly 900 miles were logged from four walks.
Dome Walk
The partnerships: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Northern Michigan University and Marquette General Health Systems
The place: Marquette
The participants: Local residents
The plan: Thanks to this partnership, residents walk for free in Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome. Since 2010, winter walking inside the dome has increased more than 300 percent.
