Health Initiatives: Programs in Action
Tackling childhood obesity
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is committed to stemming the tide of childhood obesity in the state. The number of overweight children has tripled in three decades. Obesity from an early age increases risks for heart disease, hypertension and other chronic conditions. We are helping youngsters learn the importance of healthy nutrition and physical activity.

Building Healthy Communities schools support healthy eating and physical activity
The Blues have been awarding Building Healthy Communities grants for five years. The grants are part of our mission-focused efforts to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity. Since 2004, we’ve given almost $1.7 million in grants to Michigan schools and community organizations in 44 counties.
The Building Healthy Communities grants help Michigan children become more physically active and educated about healthy eating. School and community partners chosen for the grants are typically in areas of the state that have the potential for high rates of obesity and financial need. The Blues encourage schools that receive grants to make their facilities and programs available to the community.

FIT targets students and surrounding communities to adopt healthier lifestyles
BCBSM is partnering with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Public Schools, local health systems, researchers, physicians, neighborhood businesses, faith-based leaders, community agencies and other entities to develop an incubator approach to address childhood obesity.

The goal of the pilot project, called FIT, is to design and implement a comprehensive, coordinated approach to reduce the risk factors for obesity among elementary school children at four schools in southeast Grand Rapids.
The two-year initiative works to improve environments, policies and programs for physical activity, and supports healthy eating in the schools and surrounding neighborhoods. FIT's long-term goal is to create a school, family and community culture that supports healthy weight and wellness.

Healthy Schools Action Tools map steps for schools
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is partnering with the Michigan Fitness Foundation to create and sustain healthier school environments. Fifteen schools have been selected.
HSAT is a simple online tool used by more than 1,000 Michigan schools to assess their own school's health policies and environments and, in response, plan action programs to enhance wellness.
These easy-to-use tools will enable Michigan schools to tailor research-proven health and nutrition programs for their students.
