Health Initiatives: Overview

Depression Awareness and Treatment

Learn more about depression awareness and treatment

Clinical depression is more than occasional sad or blue feelings — it's a serious illness that can affect anyone, at any age. About one in 10 people suffer from depression. That's about 950,000 people in Michigan, and 19 million people across the country.

Depression is highly treatable. Even very severe cases respond to treatment up to 80 percent of the time.

Awareness can save lives. That's why we:

  • Award grants to community-based organizations that help youth, teachers, parents, older adults and their caregivers seek help for depression
  • Screen thousands of members for depression
  • Work with community leaders to raise awareness about depression and educate them about how they can help
  • Publish educational materials about depression for the public
