Toll-free numbers can be tricky

Calling toll-free numbers used to be easier when they all started with the same area code (800). But now toll-free numbers have numerous area codes, and that makes things more complicated.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan uses 800, 855, 877 and 888 area codes — just to name a few. Why is it important to know that? Because if you accidentally dial the wrong area code, you can end up contacting an unwanted business or service.

Sometimes mistakenly dialed toll-free numbers are reported to the Blues as fraud because they may ask for credit card or personal information. In many cases it's been discovered that, as the result of human error, the wrong area code was dialed. For example, if you dial 1-800-000-0000, your call will be answered by a health plan advisor for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan individual membership. If you dial 1-866-000-0000 (only the area code is different), your call may be answered by a telemarketer offering free gift cards.

So please be careful when dialing toll-free numbers. We don’t want you to accidentally give out credit card or personal information to the wrong business.
