What is ERISA?

The Employee Retirement Income and Security Act (ERISA) of 1974 is a federal law that created rules and procedures to protect private employee pension plans from fraud and mismanagement.

What does ERISA have to do with health care plans? Other kinds of employee benefit plans, including employer-sponsored health care, fall under ERISA.
