Are flu shots covered by my insurance?

Who is this for?

Michigan Health Insurance – Customer Service – Learn More

If you're planning on getting a flu shot this year, this information will help you learn how much of the cost your health plan will cover.

According to FLU.gov, 111 million work days are lost every year because of the flu. In most cases, those who miss work, school and other important activities could have prevented their illness by getting a flu shot.

Before you get your flu shot this year, you'll want to know how much of the cost will be covered by your plan.

In addition, we'll also help you find out where you can go to get your flu shot.

To get started, you just need to know what type of plan you have:

  • PPO – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
  • HMO – Blue Care Network

PPO members

Flu shots fall under your coverage for immunizations, listed with your preventive care benefits. You can see these by logging in to your account at bcbsm.com, selecting Medical under My Coverage, and looking under What's Covered.

Once you check your benefits, you'll know how flu shot are covered.

If you're still not sure, just call the Customer Service number on the back of your ID card and we'll be happy to help.

Here's how we recommend you get your flu shot:

  • Call your doctor and schedule an appointment. If you don't have a doctor, you can find one on bcbsm.com.
  • Visit a participating pharmacy. While most pharmacies will accept your coverage, be sure to ask before you get your flu shot.

HMO members

All of our members with Blue Care Network HMO plans can get a free annual flu shot. You can get yours by visiting:

Your primary care physician. We recommend calling at least 30 days in advance to make your appointment.

A participating pharmacy—even if you don't have pharmacy (prescription drug) coverage. All you have to do is:

  • Call your local pharmacy to see if they provide flu shots.
  • Ask if they participate with Blue Care Network.
  • If they do, bring your ID card with you when you go to get your flu shot.
