Statement from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan on House Passage of Gov. Rick Snyder’s Health Insurance Modernization Proposal
Feb. 28, 2013
LANSING – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan issued the following statement on the passage of Senate Bills 61 and 62 by the Michigan House of Representatives. The bipartisan legislation, proposed by Gov. Rick Snyder and previously approved unanimously by the state Senate, and was voted out of the house today with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislation, which now moves to the Senate for concurrence before heading to the governor’s desk, would regulate all health insurers under consistent guidelines and enable the BCBSM Board of Directors to transition the company to a taxpaying, nonprofit mutual insurer.
"We applaud Gov. Snyder and the Michigan Legislature for recognizing the need for our state to have a modern and fair system of health insurance regulation, and for Blue Cross’ nonprofit mission to be preserved and sustained," said Andy Hetzel, BCBSM vice president for corporate communications. "This legislation creates a truly competitive marketplace and sustains Blue Cross’ nonprofit contributions toward a healthier Michigan."
"The regulatory reforms at the foundation of this legislation are fair and address the priorities of a number of interests and organizations," Hetzel added. "A lot of work went into these bills. The legislature managed a thoughtful, deliberative and inclusive process. Blue Cross commends the governor, legislative leaders, the committee chairs and minority vice-chairs in the House and Senate. Under our new structure, Blue Cross will contribute substantially to Michigan’s future."
"This legislation fulfills the governor's vision of a competitive marketplace, where all insurers play by the same rules. Competition will, over the longer term, give Michigan consumers greater choices in health plans at affordable prices because more companies will be competing to earn their business under fair and balanced regulations."
