DETROIT — The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Board of Directors re-elected Gregory A. Sudderth of Gladstone in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to his 11th year as board chairman, and re-elected Spencer C. Johnson of Okemos to his fifth year as board vice chairman.

Sudderth is president of Executive Labor–Management Services Inc., a company specializing in addressing the needs of private and public sector employees and their respective local unions. The company has offices in Gladstone and Farmington Hills. Sudderth has served on the Blues' board of directors since 1993 and represents the small business community.

"Greg Sudderth is unquestionably the right person at the right time to provide guidance to our management team as we change ways of doing business, seek efficiencies and set our future course," said Daniel J. Loepp, BCBSM president and CEO. "In a time of tremendous change, Greg has helped us develop new approaches to serve customer needs and navigate a demanding environment in health care."

Johnson, who is serving his fifth term as the board vice chairman, is president of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association. The MHA is the principal statewide advocate for hospitals, health systems and other health care providers committed to improving community health status. He has served on the Blues' board of directors since 1995 and represents hospitals.
"Spencer Johnson has been vital in fostering a collaborative model between Blue Cross and hospitals and physicians that has been successful in reducing unnecessary costs and improving the quality of care for tens of thousands of hospital patients in our state," Loepp said.

The BCBSM board seats 35 directors, as prescribed under Michigan Public Act 350 of 1980. Eight seats are filled by medical professionals, four by gubernatorial appointees and a nonvoting seat is filled by the company's chief executive officer. The remaining 22 seats are filled by Blues customers from large, medium and small groups, and individual subscribers.
