DETROIT — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is pleased to sponsor "Ernie" for a second consecutive year, honoring someone who lived and stood for the same values the Michigan Blues have upheld for more than 70 years: promoting good health and making life better for Michiganians.
"Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is proud to once again serve as presenting sponsor for 'Ernie.' It celebrates a legend who was dedicated to making life better for everyone he came into contact with," said Blues President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel J. Loepp. "When people see the play, they will know why we are excited to be a part of this encore presentation. It is a heart-warming, inspiring tribute to a person who lived life according to principles that transcend generations."
Starting in 2003, Ernie Harwell served as a health and fitness advocate for Blue Cross until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Throughout his tenure, Harwell lead employee walking events and fitness events throughout communities across Michigan. In 2011, the Blues dedicated its rooftop walking track at the downtown Detroit headquarters to Harwell, honoring his life, commitment to a healthy lifestyle and the people of Michigan.
"Ernie" opens on May 3 and runs through July 28 at the City Theatre in Detroit. The play chronicles Harwell's life and features actual footage from historic baseball moments from Harwell's 60-plus year broadcasting career. A portion of all proceeds from the play will benefit charities Harwell championed. Additional information is available by visiting www.ernietheplay.com.
