BCBSM to give ICD-9 and ICD-10 resource maps to health care providers

November 3, 2011

DETROIT — The Federal government is requiring the health care industry to update the codes they use regarding diseases and conditions. Effective Oct. 1, 2013, the Federal government mandates that health care entities must begin using the new revision, referred to as ICD-10, International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision. Currently, the version of codes doctors, hospitals, insurance companies and other groups in the United States health care industry use to describe diseases and conditions is called ICD-9, International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision.

Due to the volume and complexity of updates, this will serve as a large industry-wide transition, one the Blues has been working on since 2009.

As part of the preparation and implementation efforts, BCBSM completed a six-month analysis, comparing and contrasting ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. This resulted in the creation of a document map. They plan to offer this document to health care providers and other BCBS plans in the industry undergoing this transition. The hope is that this document could help reduce the time and effort of implementation in other organizations, which in turn could positively impact the industry-wide cost of the ICD-10 mandate.

The federal government also provides similar information and this is another tool for the industry to help in the ICD-10 transition.

Any interested parties can email a request to icd10projectinquiries@bcbsm.com along with their name and organization. The document will be available for distribution in the coming weeks.
