Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to double employee contributions for earthquake relief in Haiti

February 3, 2010

DETROIT - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is matching employee donations to the American Red Cross for disaster aid for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

"Blues employees have a strong tradition of helping those in need. After learning of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, we immediately provided our employees with a quick and easy means of contributing to humanitarian aid efforts by donating through the American Red Cross Web site," said Daniel J. Loepp, Blues president and CEO. "As the extent of the need and magnitude of suffering became clearer, we received an outpouring of requests from employees asking what else they could do to help. Matching employees' donations is the best way for the Blues to support American Red Cross relief efforts and help people during their time of greatest need."

The employee donations and the Blues' matching funds will be sent to the American Red Cross to help the earthquake victims, up to a maximum match of $50,000.

The need for assistance has not abated. The Haiti effort is already the largest single-country personnel deployment in global Red Cross history. Red Cross responders from eight countries are treating approximately 500 people each day at medical facilities in the capital city of Port-au-Prince alone. The Blues donations will help with these efforts.
