March 3, 2009
DETROIT - Eight Michigan-based suppliers have earned Supplier Diversity Achievement Awards from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
The suppliers' achievements were highlighted at an annual award event held at the Blues. "We take a lot of pride that, in the midst of an economic storm, our partnerships with diverse suppliers are a bright spot," said Sean Carlson, BCBSM director of Corporate Procurement. "We are committed to building a robust and best-in-class program, ensuring that minority and diverse suppliers are at the table helping Blue Cross deliver top quality health care products and services to Michigan citizens."
This year's award winners are:
New Supplier of the Year Award: VisionIT Inc. (Detroit). One of the country's largest Hispanic businesses, the information technology firm partnered with H2H Solutions Inc., of Wixom, also a minority supplier, on a Blues IT staffing project.
Diverse Supplier Achievement Award: w3r Consulting (Southfield). The IT company provides strategic consultation, IT services and project management to the Blues.
Supplier Diversity Champion Achievement Award: Kirco Construction (Troy). This award goes to a tier-one supplier who used or partnered with a diverse supplier. Kirco achieved 25 percent diversity participation on a Blues cafeteria construction project.
This fourth-annual awards program saw the addition of a new award category, Woman Business Enterprise. The Diverse Supplier Achievement Award — Woman Business Enterprise went to Strategic Staffing Solutions (Detroit). S3 supported Blues' cost-saving efforts by reducing rates for a strategic technology project.
BCBSM also added four subsidiary award categories. Each award, given by a Blues subsidiary, salutes a vendor's delivery of products or services, proactive sharing of industry developments and support of company goals, including cost savings. The winners are:
- Accident Fund Diverse Supplier Achievement Award — Tico Duckett Distribution Inc. (Lansing)
- Blue Care Network Diverse Supplier Achievement Award — GE Distribution Service LLC (Southfield)
- DenteMax Diverse Supplier Achievement Award — Michigan Office Design Inc. (Royal Oak)
- LifeSecure Diverse Supplier Achievement Award — Immersion Graphics Inc. (Commerce)
In 1992, the Blues board of directors set a procurement objective to provide equal access and opportunities to diverse businesses. "BCBSM has a goal of 15% spend with our diverse suppliers," said Carlson. "We exceeded that goal in 2008."
Successful efforts in partnering with minority and diverse suppliers have brought several honors to the Blues. For two consecutive years, the Michigan Minority Business Development Council presented BCBSM with its prestigious Corporation of the Year Award, Health Care Sector. Both the 2007 and 2008 MMBDC awards recognized the Blues' outstanding achievements in creating and maintaining a diverse network of suppliers.
