Practice changes owners but remains in Lansing area to serve patients
April 30, 2009
LANSING - Blue Care Network of Michigan is transitioning patient care from its Family Health Center located at Creyts Road in Delta Township in the Lansing area. The patient care is moving to Mid-Michigan Physicians P.C., effective Sept. 1. MMP is a well established health care provider in the Lansing region equipped to offer a broad range of services to FHC patients including radiology, pulmonary function testing, pharmacy services and urgent care in the Lansing area.
Under the agreement current health center patients will continue to receive health care services at the BCN Creyts Road location through August 31. Beginning Sept. 1, 2009, MMP will provide patient care at MMP facilities, including its primary care site on Lake Lansing Road for adult patients and internal medicine, and St. Joseph Street for pediatric care.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the parent company of Blue Care Network, continues to be a major employer in the Lansing area. While BCN medical services will no longer be provided at the Creyts Road facility, existing Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Customer Service operations will remain at the Creyts Road location.
While transitioning the FHC operation to MMP was a difficult decision, the Lansing area community can be assured that access to quality health care will remain, said Douglas R. Woll, M.D., BCN chief medical officer.
"Our goal was to negotiate an agreement with a high quality medical practice group that would continue to provide patients with compassionate, excellent care close to home. We've achieved that in our agreement with MMP," Woll said. "It made economic sense to negotiate an agreement with a third party like MMP whose core business is direct delivery of patient care."
The BCN health center currently employs about 100 people, including 12 physicians and two nurse practitioners. BCN will work with MMP to ensure a smooth transition of care and offer BCN employees an opportunity to apply for job openings at MMP in addition to placement assistance in the community.
The Creyts Road building was not part of the transaction as it is leased and not owned by BCN. BCBSM has a multi-year lease at the location, which houses BCBSM mid-Michigan operations that are not affected by the health center transition.
