April 2, 2009

DETROIT - A giant block "S" will light up both sides of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan headquarters building located in downtown Detroit beginning Thursday night to show the Blues' support for the Michigan State University Spartans men's basketball team.

The nine-story-high display will feature a green block "S" on the north side of the building and a white block "S" on the south side. The building is located on East Lafayette near I-375 in downtown Detroit, just a few blocks from Ford Field.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has also declared Friday, April 3, "Spirit Day" at all its facilities statewide. Employees are invited to wear Michigan State or green attire to work that day.

The giant block "S" will remain on the building over the next several days.

The Blues have a proud tradition of spotlighting important causes and special events with light displays, which are visible at dusk. Every February, the building displays a red heart to support National Heart Month and encourage prevention of heart disease, the single greatest cause of death in the United States. In October, a giant pink ribbon adorns the building to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encourage women to take regular mammograms. In November and December, a giant holiday tree is displayed.  The Blues also did light displays during Super Bowl XL in Detroit and to salute the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 World Series.
