Contracting to Become a Blues Agent
We're glad you have expressed an interest in becoming an independent agent with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network of Michigan. The state of Michigan requires us to ensure that all agents are licensed with the state and contracted with us to sell our products.
Step One:
Independent Blues agents, as well as their agencies, must hold a Michigan insurance license with Accident and Health qualifications. Out-of-state agents, as well as their agencies, must hold a Michigan non-resident license with Accident and Health qualifications.
To obtain a license, please visit the Michigan Department of Insurance Web site. The Web site has specific information about how to become a licensed Michigan insurance agent.
Step Two:
Once licensed, the agent must contact a BCBSM/BCN managing agent to enroll in an agent contracting session. Visit Managing Agents for a list of Blues managing agents.
Note: Out-of-state agents are not required to attend training. However, they must contact Agent Administration to obtain a BCBSM/BCN Agent Contract and Commission Reference Guide.
Step Three:
After completing a contracting session, the managing agent will provide you with a BCBSM/BCN Agent Agreement to complete.
Step Four:
Send your completed Agent Agreement, along with a copy of the agent's individual and/or agency license to Agent Administration.
Step Five:
BCBSM/BCN assigns the agent an identification number and files a Notice of Appointment with the state of Michigan.
Important: Commissions will not be paid to an agent until BCBSM/BCN has appointed that agent with the state. If an agent sells a group before they are contracted with BCBSM/BCN, commissions will not be effective until the month they are appointed.
